Konkani - Official State Language
Goa is a multi-lingual state wherein people speak different languages because they come from various regions, ethnic races and religions from India and other countries over the years.
Konkani is the mother tongue or the official language of Goans. English is widely spoken and understood, while Hindi and Marathi, the national language is widely understood by most of the population.
Portuguese was the language of the colonial rulers and the official language until 1961 before Liberation. After the departure of the Portuguese, the Portuguese language lost its usage but it remained the language of the elite and now it is spoken by the older generation only.
The Konkani language is written in both the Roman script and the Devnagri script used for languages such as Hindi and Marathi.
